World of Goo iPhone Release “Soonish” – Waiting For Approval

2dboy, developer of World of Goo, has just announced they have submitted the iPhone version to the App Store. If everything goes well with the approval, the game should be available very soon for download. 2dboy has also shared some insights on the pricing model and explained what they have learned from the iPad release:

“The iPhone version of World of Goo will be priced at $2.99 in the US (and the usual equivalents elsewhere). BUT, it’s going to be discounted to $0.99 for the first 24 hours after release as a way to say thank you to the early adopters.”

And some great news for everyone who already ownes the iPad (HD) version of World of Goo is the fact that it will become universal. That means you don’t have to buy it again if you want to play it on the go on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The game will require at least an iPhone 3GS.

News From Gameloft – Backstab Story Trailer And New N.O.V.A. Game

Gameloft has released a new story trailer for its upcoming action-adventure Backstab – Henry Blake’s Tale. It is a nice looking trailer, but besides telling us that Backstab will be driven by a revenge story, it doesn’t reveal much. Backstab will be 1 month time exclusive for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play before you can lay your hands on it on your iPhone or iPad.

On top of that, Gameloft has also revealed that they’re working on a new N.O.V.A. title called N.O.V.A. Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance Elite. Gameloft has promised before to leak some information once their official Facebook page gets to 300.000 likes. Besides the title and an artwork picture, Gameloft so far didn’t reveal any other information like a release date. But since both N.O.V.A. games were great shooters, it’s good to know that there is more to come.

Cover Orange Review – Saving Oranges Never Felt That Rewarding

cover orange header Cover Orange Review Saving Oranges Never Felt That RewardingCover Orange is a physics based puzzle game. You are asked to protect oranges from acid rain by manipulating the levels with a given amount of items. Once you have used all these items a cloud will appear and try to destroy your oranges with its acid rain – well, it’s more like acid balls in order to make the physics mechanic work.

One of the games bad points is, strangely, also a good point: Sometimes it depends a bit on luck whether your oranges get hit by some acid rain or make it out alive. It won’t happen often that despite the correct solution you will lose, but it most definitely will. The good side of this: For every time it happens, you will come across another level where, thanks to a bit of luck, you will manage to find a really crazy way to solve the puzzle. So in the end it still feels fair. And at least to me it always feels very rewarding to have ‘tricked’ a game with an alternative solution.

The controls are very slick and simple since you only need to point to the place where you want an item to drop down. The game is also nice to look at with pretty, hand-drawn background images and cute animations. The sound is nothing to write home about, but the sound effects combined with the catchy music definitely get the job done.

Cover Orange comes with loads of levels. And by loads I mean a whooping 160! The crazy thing is there are even more to come in future updates. Now that’s what I call proper post release support! For that amount of content, the $0.99 price tag is more than fair and a lite version is also available. If you are still looking for a new physics based puzzle games, this is a clear recommendation.

The One Single Feature I Really Want From iOS 5

savegames header The One Single Feature I Really Want From iOS 5

Savegames. To be more precise: A function to backup and sync savegames. So simple, yet so important to finally turn the iOS platform into a ‘real’ gaming platform. Most games of course already allow you to save your progress or even do it automatically for you – but those savegames are only stored locally on that one iPhone or iPad you have played this game on and are forever lost if you ever delete the game from that device. No savegame in iTunes, no sync available. If you look at some games taking up to 1GB of space it becomes obvious that for gamers with 16GB or 8GB iDevices this will become a problem rather sooner than later (Let’s hope that’s not intentional).

One more important point: If I start a lengthy game like Final Fantasy III on my iPad, I want to be able to synchronize that savegame to my iPhone or iPod Touch so I can continue on the go. And the more serious developers take the iOS platform, the more often you will come across such games that are just too deep to be played on 2 devices with different savegames.

The introduction of Game Center has shown that Apple is taking gaming on iOS serious, so I really hope they also address this last shortcoming of the platform. And since rumors say Apple will present its new iOS 5 on a special event sometime in April, it seems we don’t have to wait long until we find out. Fingers crossed.
