The iPad 2 is available in the US since today. And to make a purchase worth your while we are seeing updates for the iOS heavy weights Dead Space and Infinity Blade and the release of iPad 2 optimized Real Racing 2 HD.

Dead Space HD comes with enhanced graphics to take advantage of the beefy A5 processor and the enhanced graphic capabilities the iPad 2 comes with. It also includes 2 new features that fans of the game were asking for: Adjustable look sensitivity and y-axis inversion. Those two features are also available in a free update for the iPhone and iPod Touch version of Dead Space. Dead Space HD is also on sale for $6.99 at the moment, so be sure to grab it before it’s back up at $9.99.

Infinity Blade has just seen a huge update called ‘The Deathless Kings’ that has added tons of content to this incredible game. Now Chair will push the graphical limits on iOS even further with yet another update to take advantage of the new iPad 2. The update is not live yet as I’m writing this article, but it should show up within the next hours. That’s what I call support, kudos to Chair!

And last but not least the release of Firemints Real Racing 2 HD that has been optimized for the iPad 2. Reactions to this release have been positive so far, so if you are into racing, what are you waiting for?

It’s really good to see developers supporting the iPad 2 from day one. Let’s hope the support continues to be this good for the future then I am sure we will see some amazing titles – well, to be fair, with Infinity Blade, Dead Space and Real Racing 2 we already have some amazing titles right now!

Game Dev Story Review – A Gamers Dream Come True

game dev story icon Game Dev Story Review A Gamers Dream Come True Game Dev Story will make the dream of countless gamers become reality on their iPhone: Being the head of their very own game development studio. You will be in charge of everything – from hiring people, to setting the scenario and taking care of the advertisement, everything will happen the way you want it to. Awesome.

You start the game by choosing a name for your new start-up studio. That means you have very limited funds and literally no fans who support you yet. Of course we need to change this fact, so you will start hiring writers, graphic designers, sound engineers and programers to get down to business. And now the fun begins: You have to decide what game you want to develop. Do you want to develop an action-adventure in a pirate setting? Or what about a shooter in a sci-fi scenario? But that’s not all, you will also be able to exactly decide on what things you want to focus with the game. A limited amount of points are waiting to be spent on certain attributes like ‘Polish’, ‘Approachability’ or ‘Innovation’ just to name a few. The combination of all of these factors will decide how the critics are going to rate your game. And you will usually sell a lot more copies of well rated games of course.

One more thing that influences your sales is the platform you chose to release the game on. As you progress in Game Dev Story, new consoles will be announced and old consoles will be taken off the market on a regular basis. But you can’t just go ahead and develop for a new console – you have to get a license first. The licenses are pretty expensive, so you want to choose carefully which platform is worth to have it in your portfolio. And since the next console generation is never too far away, you will also have to get new licenses to stay on top of the market. And don’t be surprised if the names of the consoles will sound kind of familiar. If you have followed the development of the gaming industry and the rise and fall of the consoles we have seen in the past decades, you will love the attention to detail that has gone into Game Dev Story.

So as the years go by, you will keep on leveling up your staff, unlock new game scenarios and even move offices. Thanks to demo distributions and other advertisement you arranged, you have built a solid fan base. And yet every time you release a new game it still feels exciting to see how it will be received by the critics and how good the game will sell. And what makes the game so great is the ease of controlling everything. Of course this is no Civilization V that we are talking about, but the guys at Kairosoft managed to pack quite a bit of complexity into a very intuitive and simple menu system. Well done.

The presentation of the game is simple yet charming. It comes in an 8-bit retro look complete with fitting sound effects. Don’t expect anything spectacular compared to what is possible on a current iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. But rest assured I would never consider the graphics to be any drawback. Considering the era you start in Game Dev Story it fits just perfect.

If you have ever dreamed of having your own development studio one day, don’t hesitate to buy Game Dev Story. It is currently on 50% sale for $1,99 on the App Store so be sure to grab it soon! However, even for $3,99 I can only recommend it. The time that most people I know have spent with it makes this price tag more than reasonable. If you want to give it a try first, there is also a lite version available.

Bumpy Road – Unique Platfomer Coming “Early This Spring”

Simogo, developer of Kosmos Spin, has released an announcement trailer for their upcoming title Bumpy Roads. The game seems to be a very unique variation of a 2d platformer. You will guide a “loving copule in their autumn years” in their car through several levels while collecting their memories. Each memory will unlock new bits of the story. So far, so conventional. But now comes the spin: You don’t control the car – you control the environment. By touching the screen you will make the ground lift up and the car will react accordingly. The trailer shows this concept very nicely:

The controls seem to be implemented very well and look like a good bit of fun. It will be interesting to get our hands on it to see how it actually feels to control the car by moving the ground. So far it looks like a well designed and fun casual game. Simogo also gives away a vague release date: Bumpy Road is supposed to be available for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad “early this spring”.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard – New Trailer and Release on March 17

Gameloft has just released a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming iOS shooter Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard. While showing off some gameplay it also announces the game to be released next week on March 17. It will come with 11 missions that take place all over the world, 3 player co-op and a 10 player versus mode. Sounds good and looks like fun from what I have seen so far in the trailer. Let’s find out next week if the game can hold up to it. But watch yourself:

Pizza Boy Review – A Love Letter To Old-School Platformers For Your iPhone, iPod And iPad

pizza boy top Pizza Boy Review A Love Letter To Old School Platformers For Your iPhone, iPod And iPad
When I saw Pizza Boy, I instantly had to think about Alex Kidd. The look of Pizza Boy seems to be highly inspired by this SEGA classic. But it’s not only the look that will remind you of similar old-school platformers, you will most likely think the same of the gameplay. And in Pizza Boys case, that’s a complement.

Let’s talk about the most important aspect of a 2d platformer first, the controls. I’ll keep it short: The controls are amongst the very best that’s available for the iPhone and iPod. I am still astonished of just how directly I felt to be in control of the character. The game comes with 4 buttons: left/right, jump and throw. Throwing is for the milk bottles that you can collect on the way. You can use them to get rid of enemies that cross your way and to destroy special stone blocks that block the way to special goodies.

The gameplay won’t surprise you in any way, but the level design and enemy placement is very clever and will become quite challenging as you progress. You will jump from platform to platform, avoid dogs, penguins and birds that try to attack you and collect some stuff on your way to the end of each of the 12 levels. You will start with 3 pizza slices that represent your health bar. If you lose one of them you can collect some slices in the levels. Once you lose all, you lose a live. If you lose a live you have to start from the very beginning of each level, which can be a bit frustrating on one hand, but is also one more aspect that makes this game feel so old-school and challenging.

There are 5 things to collect: The pizza slices I already mentioned to boost your health bar, strawberries that will give you an extra live for every 100 you grab, an actual extra live, a cat wants to be saved which will give you bonus points and the 5 letters of the word pizza that will also give you some bonus points. Those are placed in some pretty tricky spots, so collecting all of them will be quite a challenge.

The graphics are nice to look at with a lot of retro charm – but don’t expect anything impressive from a technical point of view. However, this makes the game run very smooth even on an older iPhone or iPod. The only negative thing I have to mention is the length of Pizza Boy. It comes with 3 scenarios that have 4 levels each and you will have seen all of them sooner than you would want to. Replay value is not that high, but I did enjoy to go back to the levels and collect all the pizza letters I have missed on my first way through.

If all this talk about retro platformers made you feel all warm around your heart, I can only recommend to download Pizza Boy. Unfortunately there is no lite version available, so you will have to jump into the cold water with this one. It’s available for $1,99.
