Angry Birds Rio Review – An Excellent Addition To The Series For Your iPhone and iPad

angry birds rio icon2 Angry Birds Rio Review An Excellent Addition To The Series For Your iPhone and iPadIt seems to be an unwritten law that games based on movies suck. That’s why I am more than happy to say that Angry Birds Rio is clearly an exception to that rule. It turned out to be a great game that uses the movie only as a theme to surround its terrific gameplay formula.

And that formula remains almost untouched in Angry Brids Rio. The objective is still to tear down a structure that is put together out of different materials like glass, wood and stone. You will do this by shooting ‘Angry Birds’ via a slingshot right at the structure. The game gives you a different set of birds for each level, with each bird being especially good at destroying one type of material. So you will first have to identify a structural weakness and then go for it with the appropriate bird. A little twist is that you are now asked to destroy cages that are put into the structure to free birds that are trapped inside rather than hitting some mean pigs. But this is more of a visual change rather than having any influence on the gameplay. There are also bonus fruits and characters of the movie to be discovered. In the final of the 60 levels you will even come across a boss fight.

The presentation has been tweaked everywhere. The graphics are sharp and the 2 locations, warehouse and jungle, are really nice to look at (I especially like the warehouse). Rovio has also added some parallax scrolling that creates a bit of depth and gives the visuals a nice touch. Even the menus have been tweaked to be more accessible.

And there is more to come: On the level selection screen are 4 empty slots named ‘May’, ‘July’, ‘October’ and ‘November’ – so get ready for some more action to come within the next months. I always appreciate it a lot when developers keep on bringing new content to their games with regular updates, so kudos to Rovio.

Right now Angry Birds is the biggest brand in mobile(phone) gaming and rightly so. It just blends together the accessibility of a casual game with the challenge and depth of ‘hardcore’ titles so incredibly well. Angry Birds Rio is a great addition to the series and available on the App Store for iPhone [$0.99] and iPad [$2.99].

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard Review – Gameloft’s Best iPhone FPS?

tom clancys rainbow six shadow vanguard head Tom Clancys Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard Review Gamelofts Best iPhone FPS?Gameloft has been pushing the limits of iPhone gaming from the very beginning of the App Store. That explains why there is always a bit of excitement in the air when they are about to release a new game. And with Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard, Gameloft has yet again released a fantastic iPhone shooter.

The Rainbow Six series is famous for it’s tactical gameplay. And while Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard is definitely more action focused than the previous parts of the series, its gameplay benefits a lot from some of the tactical elements. You and your 2 AI teammates are asked to stop terrorist activity over the 11 missions of the campaign. Run and gun does work on the lower difficulty to solve this task thanks to a pretty bad AI, but you will definitely have to plan your way ahead on higher difficulties. I really recommend to play the campaign on a challenging difficulty because that’s when the game started to become a lot of fun. You can peek under doors with a snake camera, mark terrorists and then direct your teammates to clean the room. You can also take cover behind various objects to recover your health and take out terrorists from a safe spot. A very pleasant surprise was the level design. There is always more than one way to approach certain objectives. It gives you a little bit of freedom that makes you feel like you are in charge of how to complete the mission. During the campaign you will gain experience that unlocks new gadgets like a red dot sight that you can then attach to your weapon.

The controls are pretty much what you nowadays expect from an iPhone FPS. The only disappointment for some could be that compared to previous releases, Gameloft offers very limited options to customize them to your likes. But this is only a minor setback, the standard controls get the job done very well.

Gameloft has improved their graphic engines continuously with every release and Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard is no exception. It looks great and offers some nice variety. Each level has its distinguish look, be it an oil rig, a village in the Congo or an impressive mansion. What impressed me most however was the sound. A lot of people were complaining about the bad voice overs of previous Gameloft titles. And while the quality was already getting better in Gameloft’s latest releases, they seem to have really focused on it this time around. And the effort paid off. Even the dialogues between some terrorists that you can hear every now and then if you sneak up on them are fun to listen to. I also liked the contextual background music which adds a nice touch to the overall atmosphere. On the bad side are only some strange animations every now and then, especially the one of patrolling guards looks pretty hilarious. While the overall presentation of Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard cannot compete with Infinity Blade, it definitely is amongst the best on the App Store.

The game also comes with 10 player deathmatch and a co-op mode for 3 players to satisfy your multiplayer needs. Both modes are a great deal of fun and absolutely worth checking out.

Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard turned out to be a fantastic shooter that you should not miss out on. It’s available on the App Store since last week for $6.99. And if you are still indecisive, check out the gameplay trailer to see it in action.

sword sworcery archetype small Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP iPad Release Next Week And iPhone in April“Here’s the announcement, right now: S:S&S EP has been approved by Apple & it’s set for release this week!” Yes! Capybara Games has announced via Twitter that Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP has just been approved by Apple and the iPad version will be available on the App Store next week. If you only own an iPhone or iPod Touch you will have to wait until some time in April.

The announcement is not that much of a surprise, since the last trailer mentioned the game would be released “around the Vernal Equinox“, which is the 20th of March this year. But it is great news nevertheless. If you don’t own an iPad you are however still a bit in the open, since “April” is not the most precise date I could think of. But if you look at the experience that S:S&S EP wants to be, I can actually see this game working better on an iPad – but I don’t have any doubt that it will be a great deal of fun on iPhone and iPod Touch.

Liqua Pop Review – Great Looking Matching Game For Casual Fun On Your iPhone

liqua pop icon2 Liqua Pop Review Great Looking Matching Game For Casual Fun On Your iPhoneLiqua Pop could be considered as something like a prototype of a casual game. It is very simple to understand so everyone can pick it up and instantly start having fun. And the stunning visuals make sure your eyes are in for a treat as well.

The gameplay mechanics behind Liqua Pop are very, very simple. You have to match water drops of the same color that are falling down to make them pop before the screen is completely filled up. Once you have combined 4 drops a timer will start to make the drop pop. But since you will get more points for bigger drops you can reset that timer by double tapping the drop to combine it with even more drops. Shaking your iPhone will make all the drops with an active timer instantly pop. The game will also one by one introduce bugs that are caught up in the drops. Each of these bugs will have a special effect like changing the color of all surrounding drops, if you pop the water drop it’s in.

On the left side of the screen is a frog called ‘Toadie’ climbing up a straw. Popping drops will help him climb up the straw to reach a shiny drop at the top. Once he reaches it, the level is complete.

The presentation of Liqua Pop is stunning. The drops come in bright colors and feature a great looking liquid simulation that is fun to mess around with. The sound gives the game a relaxing touch to it thanks to its nature sounds with brids tweeting in the background.

The game is available for $1.99 on the App Store. But have in mind what I mentioned at the beginning: This is a casual game through and through. So while this might be great news for people who just want to start up a game every now and then while waiting for the bus, it could be a bit of a setback if you appreciate more complex games.
