Cut the Rope Review – Everything That’s Fun About Puzzle Games is in These Boxes

cut the rope icon Cut the Rope Review Everything Thats Fun About Puzzle Games is in These BoxesSometimes you are wondering, ‘Why has nobody thought of this idea before?’ – that’s at least what I did when I got my hands on Cut the Rope. The idea behind it just seemed so obvious and well suited for the iOS platform that it is crazy it took so long for such a game to arrive. On top of that it’s presented in a very colorful and cute way and we have learned from Angry Birds that an addictive gameplay combined with a cute presentation is a formula for success on the App Store.

The story behind the game is simple and describes your task very well. Basically, there’s a box in front of your door with a little creature called ‘Om Nom’ that needs to be fed by you. Shouldn’t be that hard, right? The trick is that you need to guide the candy right into little Om Noms mouth. You will be doing this by, here it comes, cutting the rope that the candy is attached to. You will do this by simply swiping your finger across the rope you intend to cut. This is very simple at the begging since there is only one rope hanging right above Om Nom. So you cut that one and that’s it. As you advance to further levels, new tools and obstacles will be introduced to make this task become more and more tricky. The candy will start floating around in bubbles, spiders will crawl down your ropes to steal your candy and spikes will wait to destroy your candy if you let it touch them, just to name a few. New tools and obstacles are introduced one by one and combined with the ones you’re already facing, the difficulty slowly ramps up.

But getting the candy into Om Noms mouth is not everything that’s to it. In every level there are 3 stars waiting to be collected. You can do so by touching them with the candy. Collecting the stars is not only optional, because once you have collected a certain amount of them you will unlock the next box with new levels and challenges. So sometimes it is quite easy to get the candy to Om-Nom, but really hard to collect all 3 stars on the way. But it never feels frustrating, the game always kept me motivated to get “just this one more star”.

This is a clear recommendation to anyone who is into physics based puzzle games. It is definitely amongst the best of the genre on the App Store. And on top of that Chillingo keeps on supporting it with updates that bring new boxes, which is always very nice to see. And as we were speaking of success formulas at the beginning: Cut the Rope has sold 1 million copies in its first 10 days. You were not amongst them? For $0.99 on the iPhone it’s a steal. The iPad version will set you back $1,99 and there are even 2 free versions for you to try, the common lite version and a Holiday special. So what are you waiting for? Om Nom is hungry!

League of Evil Review – The iPhone Challenge You Were Looking For

league of evil icon2 League of Evil Review The iPhone Challenge You Were Looking ForLeague of Evil is a challenging platformer that comes in a charming 8-bit retro look. A lot of people have compared it to the not so long ago released Super Meat Boy that was a great success. And the similarities are definitely there. However, while both games will become very challenging after a while, League of Evils difficulty does not reach Super Meat Boys insanity.

The gameplay boils down to: Starting at point A and getting to point B without touching anything harmful. As usual, this sounds very simple, but the developer knows how to make you struggle more and more along the way. The controls are slick and very responsive. It comes with 4 on screen buttons: Left/right, jump and hit. You can perform double jumps, wall jumps and slowly slide down the walls. Some of the obstacles in your way can be destroyed by punching them, like patrolling soldiers, while others are indestructible and you have to carefully plan your way around them. One very important point for such a game: When you die, loading times are nearly non-existent, you can retry immediately. Since dying will happen not only occasionally, this is very important.

League of Evil comes with 102 levels divided into 3 scenarios: ‘Weapon of Mass Destruction’, ‘The Blocks Cometh!’ that features the looks of the game it is named after developed by Halfbot and ‘The Impossible Missions’ – the name pretty much speaks for itself with the difficulty being ramped up quite a bit in the 18 levels this scenario comes with. You can find Briefcases that function as bonus points in all of the 102 levels. They are placed in pretty tricky spots and you will definitely come across some that you will have to try over and over again until you finally collect them. The game will also gather statistical data like ‘Player Deaths’, ‘Enemies Defeated’ and ‘Average Level Time’. That’s some nice infotainment that I enjoyed looking at every now and then.

League of Evil will set you back $1,99 but it is well worth it if you enjoy the occasional platformer fix and a healthy challenge on your iPhone, iPod or iPad. If you are not sure yet, don’t hesitate to give the free lite version a try.

The Bitmap Brothers’ Z And More Coming To The App Store

z game2 The Bitmap Brothers Z And More Coming To The App StoreThis is exciting news for retro gamers. Bitmap Brothers was a big name in the 80′s and 90′s and some of their best titles are heading to iOS. Do you remember their RTS ‘Z’ for example? It was originally released in 1996 and very well received back then. Critics loved it and gamers bricked their keyboards. What? Yes, the game was pretty hard, so the occasional rage-throw of a keyboard at some point was almost inevitable. If this makes you feel all nostalgic, then you should probably already start recapping your most successful strategies to safe your iPad, iPhone or iPod from some serious damage. Z was presented by KavCom running on an iPad but no release date was mentioned yet.

And besides Z we might see even more Bitmap Brothers classics on the iOS platform. Tower Games, the ones responsible for the recently released port of The Bitmap Brothers’ Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe are planning to develop more of these classics for the App Store. Amongst them is the 1993 top-down shooter ‘The Chaos Engine’. It got rated very well by the critics and was released on a lot of platforms. But again, no release date was mentioned. I guess all we can do for now is hope that that’s gonna be sooner than later.

Sonic 4: Episode I Review – Did Sonic Get Into Shape For His iPhone Appearance?

sonic header Sonic 4: Episode I Review Did Sonic Get Into Shape For His iPhone Appearance?
Sonic. We have gone through so much with this blue hedgehog – we have spent some memorable moments in gaming history, but also had to go through some very(very!) rough times with him. Way back then when it was Sega vs Nintendo it ultimately led to Sonic vs Mario. I was the proud owner of a Sega Master System – so I allied with the hedgehog. And I spent some great times with him.

But then Sega kept releasing new Sonic games on a regular basis and the quality of some of these games just couldn’t keep up with the expectations we all had from the original releases. At one point Sonic games were downright horrible. I felt bad for my blue friend. So every time when I hear of a new Sonic release these days, I expect the worst while hoping for the very best. And when Sonic 4: Episode I was announced to return to the roots, I even got excited. And while it did not turn out to be amongst the best, I did enjoy playing it and am definitely looking forward to the upcoming parts of the Sonic 4 series to appear on the App Store.

To some extent it looks, sounds and feels like a classic Sonic game with a modern touch to it. I like the overall presentation. However, some people were disappointed with the 3d model of Sonic and I have to agree. It’s still Sonic, no doubt – but it’s tweaked and modernized just a tad too much for my taste. (if you take a closer look at the old school Sonic on the loading screen, you will know what I mean) Besides the models, everything else is kept in 2d. One thing that put me off was the physics engine – Sonics movement feels a bit awkward. In combination with a level design that is just not on par with what you expect from a Sonic release, this hurts the gameplay. I just never really felt this ‘flow’ that is so important for a Sonic game.

The game comes with 4 Zones: ‘Splash Hill Zone’, ‘Casino Street Zone’, ‘Lost Labyrinth Zone’ and ‘Mad Gear Zone’. Each of these Zones comes with 3 levels and a boss fight against good old Dr. Eggman. The 4 Zones are visually very different and also offer a good deal of variety. In the Lost Labyrinth Zone you will be seated in a mine wagon. You steer it by tilting your iPhone left and right and jump by tapping on the screen. You will also come across a pinball level in the Casino Street Zone where you can hunt your personal highscore. The typical special levels are included as well and they are actually quite challenging. Again, you control Sonic by tilting your iPhone to catch all the rings and Chaos Emeralds.

Ken Balough, brand manager of Sonic the Hedgehog, has just recently spoken about some of the issues quite some people had with the game and promised the team is working hard to get these things right in Sonic 4: Episode II. He also mentioned that Episode I was a commercial success, what probably allows for a bigger Episode II budget. No release date was mentioned, just a vague “you wont have to wait years”.

So what’s the final verdict on Sonic 4: Episode I? It is not a masterpiece, but as promised, it features some back to the roots gameplay. And while this is a good thing, it could have been a bit more polished here and there. But despite all of its shortcomings, I still had a great time playing it on my iPhone. Hey, it’s Sonic!

Apple iPad 2 – Overview And What’s In It For Us Gamers

It is just moments ago that Apple has presented the all new iPad 2. And while it does not reinvent the tablet, it is a fine evolution of an already great product. The most outstanding new features:

- A front-facing camera (VGA at 30fps, coming with Photo Booth and Face Time)
- A rear-facing camera (720p video recording at 30fps)
- Up to 2x faster processor, thanks to the new 1GHz dual-core Apple A5
- Up to 9x faster graphics
- 33% thinner, 34% lighter
- Also available in white from day 1

In a sentence I would sum it up as ‘A thinner, lighter and faster iPad with 2 cameras’. Apple also presented a ‘Smart Cover’ with the purpose to protect the screen while keeping the iPad thin and lightweight. And I have to give credit to the designers of this Smart Cover, it really is a clever designed piece of accessory. You attach it to the iPad with a self-aligning magnetic hinge and fold it up to use it as a stand.

So what’s in it from a gamers perspective? Well, it’s quite interesting to look at the expectations that were build up over to past few weeks to find a feature that actually didn’t change to be an important factor: The display. The iPad 2 comes with the exact same 1024 x 768 display. This means the “up to 9x faster graphics” power can be pumped right into all sorts of shaders, more complex geometry, bigger environments, refined physics, better animations and all these kind of fancy things. In the end it comes down to the developers of course to actually utilize that additional power, but with Epic, one of the market leaders in graphic technology already being present on the iOS platform, I think this question is already answered. Gameloft, a developer that has been pushing gaming on the iPhone from the very beginning, has just recently announced to have made a long term licensing agreement with Epic for their Unreal Engine 3. Bring it!
