I just caught wind of an upcoming iOS game called Squids – and from what I’ve seen so far, this unique title looks pretty promising! Squids will put you in charge of a small army of sea creatures who will need to protect their idyllic underwater world from some nasty black ooze. This black ooze not only ruins the great view, it’s also highly infectious, turning harmless creatures into ruthless monsters. Inspired by tactical RPGs, Squids features turn-based battles complete with special moves, combo attacks and customizable characters.
However, what first caught my eye was Squids’ art direction. This game looks great. There’s an incredible amount of detail everywhere you look; from the backgrounds to the character design and their animations. Therefore, it was not that much of a surprise to find out that the development studio of Squids, The Game Bakers, was founded by former Ubisoft employees who were working on AAA console titles. And in case you are as eager as I am to play this game, I’m glad to say that you won’t have to wait much longer. Squids will be released this September on the App Store.
Infinity Field HD [$1.99], an incredibly fun dual-stick shooter, is finally making its way to the iPhone. The game is available on the iPad for quite some time now and I’m really into it, so it’s great to see that it will soon be available to a broader audience. Infinity Field is a lot like the Xbox Live Arcade title Geometry Wars [$0.99] but it also offers some unique gameplay elements that make it stand out. Interestingly, Geometry Wars is also available on the App Store. And although I was a huge fan of the original Geometry Wars when it hit XBLA, I have to say that on iOS I prefer Infinity Field.
While the trailer does reveal that Infinity Field for iPhone is going to be published by Chillingo and that it will ship with Retina support, it doesn’t announce a release date or price. I would be happy to see the iPad version of the game to become Universal once the iPhone only version is out. We’ll keep you posted as we find out more. And if you own an iPad, go ahead and check it out, it’s a great arcade game!
Now that’s finally a good reason to smash one of those Like buttons on Facebook: The folks at id Software thought it’s a good idea to stir up the marketing machine with a Facebook promotion, now that their all-new fps franchise Rage is approaching its release date. The already available iPhone and iPad version of the game will become free for one week once Rage’s page reaches 100.000 likes. That’s right, so now is the time to buckle up, do mankind a favor and hit that like button over there. The page already has 75.000 likes as I write this, so we are 75% there. We liked Rage for iOS a lot in our review, so it’s definitely a game that you should’t miss once it’s free.
If I had to give you an idea of what Tiny Tower [Free] is, I’d say something like: It’s free(mium), it’s fun, it’s highly addictive. With Tiny Tower, developer Nimlbebit has really hit the sweet spot when it comes to designing a fantastic freemium title. And if I tell you that the already great Pocket Frogs [Free] was from the same developer, you know what to expect.
The gameplay is rather simple: Your goal is to grow your Tiny Tower by adding new floors, moving in new citizens (called bitizens) and employing them in the various businesses that you set up in your tower. To get things done, you need two resources: Money in form of coins, and time in form of Towerbux. Everything in Tiny Tower has its price and after you bought it, it will take some time until it’s available. That’s where the Towerbux come in – you can spend them to shorten that time. So, how do you get hold of these two resources? Earning coins is very straight forward; just sell the stuff in your stores to your bitizens and you’ll get some coins for it.
Towerbux on the other hand are pretty hard to come by. Every now and then your bitizens tip you a Towerbux when you find someone for them or take them to the floor they want to. You’ll also get some for certain achievements like putting a bitizen into his dream job or fully stocking one of your shops. So you do come across them here and there, but you won’t get nearly enough to add new floors all the time.
Well, this is where the freemium concept comes in. You can buy Towerbux as an In-App Purchase to accelerate your progress. Unfortunately, Nimblebit has changed the way that Tiny Tower behaves quite a bit since its release. So while a few weeks ago you could build along pretty quickly without the need to buy any Towerbux, the game is nowadays significantly slower if you don’t make use of the In-App Purchases. While these adaptions to the gameplay mechanics are obviously not the most popular ones, it is understandable from Nimblebit’s point of view – something needs to put food on their tables after all.
But don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t mean that you can’t play the game without spending money on it. You definitely can. And it’s still fun, too. You just need to be comfortable with the slow progress and that there’s not that much to do all at once. The beauty about this is that, obviously, the game is available for free on the App Store, so go ahead and give it a try! But have in mind: Tiny Tower [Free] can become pretty addictive!
Anomaly Warzone Earth [$1.99|$3.99] is a tower defense game, that’s not a tower defense game. Strange but true, since this game swaps the seats and puts you in charge of the attacking forces. Anomaly Warzone Earth is already available on the Mac App Store and Valve’s Steam platform and we couldn’t wait for it to finally come to iOS. The game was received pretty well by critics and gamers alike, so I’m happy to say that the transition from keyboard and mouse input to touch controls went very well. It’s done so well in fact, that the game feels like it was developed with touch controls in mind. On top of it Anomaly Warzone Earth [$1.99|$3.99] looks great, sounds great and I’m already having a blast with it. If you’re into the strategy genre, this one’s for you!
NyxQuest [$0.99|$2.99] is a gorgeous looking puzzle platformer which was originally released on Nintendo’s WiiWare. Now Chillingo brought this game to iOS – and I thank them for it. You’re in control of the girl Nyx who came down to earth to find out why Icarus, a regular visitor of the heavens, has gone missing. If this sounds like Greek mythology to you then you’re absolutely right. You will have to solve physic based puzzles and use all your platforming skills to help Nyx through the levels. NyxQuest is currently on sale to celebrate its release and you can also check out the free lite versions [iPhone|iPad] to see if this is your cup of tea.
