Anomaly Warzone Earth Review: Tower Defense Just Got Better

anomaly warzone header Anomaly Warzone Earth Review: Tower Defense Just Got Better

Anomaly Warzone Earth [$1.99|$3.99] takes the concept of tower defense games and turns it upside down. Instead of defending yourself from wave after wave of enemies on your iOS device, this time around you are the one making your way through predefined defense structures. And I’m happy to say that the result is a game that feels very unique and stands out from the many casual games that are available for iPhone and iPad.

In Anomaly Warzone Earth our planet has been invaded by some nasty aliens and it’s your objective to fight back. Easier said than done, because throughout the campaign you’ll regularly have to face new alien structures that will try to stop you from succeeding. But it’s not just the aliens who are introducing new units every so often, you will also be given new troops to blast those defenses to oblivion. To make things more complicated, you can collect resources throughout the missions that will allow you to upgrade or swap specific units. But that’s not all, in order to keep things interesting as your troops are making their way through enemy lines, you are given a limited amount of special abilities which you’ll need to activate at the right time to support your troops.

As you can imagine by now, Anomaly Warzone Earth offers quite a bit of strategic depths that want to be explored and exploited. First, there’s the choice of troops, then there’s the route you plan to take, the choice of upgrades for your troops and the strategic placement of the special abilities. Such an amount of options could easily be overwhelming, but Anomaly Warzone Earth’s campaign does an excellent job at introducing you to each element and slightly increasing the difficulty. It manages to offer you a challenge that makes you feel you’ve accomplished something once you successfully finish a mission, without ever being too frustrating to move on.

Anomaly Warzone Earth was first released on Mac and Windows systems before it saw the light of day on iOS devices. So the first question that came to my mind was obviously if the controls translated well from mouse to touchscreen input. And what can I say, the folks at 11 bit studios really nailed this transformation. It actually feels as if the game was developed with touch controls in mind, that’s how well they work.

And it’s not just the controls that shine, the presentation is also more than satisfying. The mission briefings are fully voiced over and sound very professional. The music and sound effects fit the action on screen perfectly and the graphics are also nice to look at. Everything is very polished and makes sure that Anomaly Warzone Earth [$1.99|$3.99] feels like more than the sum of its parts. This is a game that strategy fans shouldn’t miss and I’m sure that it will introduce new fans to the genre!

Battlefield 3 For iPhone Is Called Battlefield 3: Aftershock, Looks Promising

If you’re the least bit into gaming, there’s probably no way that you haven’t been drooling over the footage of EA’s upcoming FPS Battlefield 3. Now, good news is that not only its release date is getting closer and closer, but EA is also working on an iOS version called Battlefield 3: Aftershock. And although the screenshots don’t reveal much, the graphics do look pretty sharp, although a tad sterile. Unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot more that we know about it right now. We can tell from some menu screenshots that it will come with at least 2 multiplayer modes, Death Match and Team Death Match. Looking at how the Battlefield series started to emphasize on great single player experiences, my guess is that it will also offer an offline campaign mode. There’s also no word yet when Battlefield 3: Aftershock will be released on the App Store or what it will cost you. With Bad Company 2, there is already a Battlefield game from EA on the App Store. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite live up to its name. Let’s hope that changes this time around.

Looking at Battlefield 3: Aftershock, I guess it’s pretty safe to assume that it’s running on a completely new engine. And with the fact at hand that EA wants to further expand their influence in the mobile market, chances should be pretty good that we will soon be able to play some pretty rad online matches on our iPhones and iPads.

Rage For iPhone And iPad Is Now Free For One Week!

rage header 2 Rage For iPhone And iPad Is Now Free For One Week!

100.000 Likes – touchdown! We posted a few days ago that id Software was running a promotion with the intention to make Rage [free] and Rage HD [free] free for one week, if Rage’s Facebook page reaches 100.000 likes. Well, it just crossed that mark and consequently Rage is already available for free on the App Store. We liked id’s rail-shooter quite a bit in our review and strongly recommended it to action fans. Now that it’s free, this one should be a no-brainer pickup.

One thing that you might want to keep in mind as you are heading over to the App Store now: Both Rage and Rage HD are Universal Apps. The HD version of Rage is, unlike most HD version of games, not an iPad optimized version. Nope, in Rage’s case, it means that it’s packed with high-resolution textures to make the game look sharper. So if your device can handle it and you can spare the extra space that these textures need, Rage HD is the version you should go for.

Hot And New: This Week’s Game Releases You Should Check Out

It’s Thursday again, and in iOS Land this means there’s a ton of new games to play for your iPhone and iPad. We had a look at the releases and want to share with you our list of, what we think are, the most interesting new games:

Emissary of War [Free Universal] is a fully voiced over, story driven hack and slash game with pretty cool graphics. And it’s free. Need I say any more? Well, as great as this sounds (and let me reassure you, it is great), there’s one downside: Emissary of War is a very short game. You can buy an additional Chapter to play via a $2.99 In-App Purchase. Unfortunately, even with this additional Chapter, the game will only last for about one hour or so. Nevertheless, the content that’s available is great, so you should give it a shot.

iBlast Moki 2 [$0.99|$2.99 Universal], the successor of one of my all-time favorite puzzle games on iOS, seems to be improved in a lot of ways and better than ever! There’s even a Portal 2 inspired feature with colored bombs that change the properties of the grounds and make the Mokis accelerate or stick on it for example. I hope you had a chance to get the first iBlast Moki for free yesterday, so you experienced first hand that Godzilab knows how to pull-off a great puzzle game optimized for touchscreen controls. It’s available right now on a special release sale, so be sure to grab it while it’s still cheap!

DEO [$0.99] sets itself apart with a very unique looking art style. I always appreciate it when developers try to create something new and unique. And in DEO’s case, the devs also seem to have found a fitting gameplay mechanic. It’s a puzzle game in which you need to make sure to not fall off the rotating levels. It’s pretty hypnotizing and has a certain atmosphere to it, making it a perfect game for some lonely, rainy days. Right now, DEO doesn’t have an iPad optimized version.

Rouge Sky [$0.99|$1.99] puts you in command of a hot air ballon which you’ll need to guide through action packed levels and defend against various enemies that are waiting in the skies. Rogue Sky is available for a a special launch price right now, so if this sounds like a great game to you, be sure to get it while it’s still on sale!

iBlast Moki For iPhone: Awesome Puzzle Game Is Free Today!

Now that’s a freebie that you definitely shouldn’t miss out on. iBlast Moki [Free|iPad] was a very outstanding physics based puzzle game when it was released on the App Store almost 2 years ago. And in my book, it still is amongst the most fun and original puzzle games you can get for your iPhone or iPad.

And since developer Godzilab has just recently announced that iBlast Moki 2 is coming out later this summer, what better way is there to get familiar with the franchise? iBlast Moki is, as the name suggest, all about blasting some creatures called Mokis into safety by carefully placing bombs and coordinating the timing of the explosions. It’ a unique and fun concept that will keep you busy for quite a while. And hey, the game is free today, so what are you waiting for?
