GTA: Chinatown Wars Review – iPhone Gaming Is Growing Up

gta top GTA: Chinatown Wars Review iPhone Gaming Is Growing UpWhen Rockstar announced that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be released on the App Store this was big news. One of the studios with the best reputation amongst hardcore gamers was about to release a game of their best selling and best rated series for the iOS platform. This felt like a game changer.

GTA: CTW was originally released on Nintendo’s DS in 2009 (with a PSP port later that year) and since the DS uses a touchscreen as an additional input method next to its traditional d-pad and buttons, GTA: CTW was optimized for a touch interface from the very beginning of its development.

That is also why a lot of people had been hoping for this port long before it was announced – the iPhone was technically more than capable of handling this game and the similarity of the input methods of the DS and iPhone were pretty obvious.

But enough about the background, lets talk about the game itself. And what shall I say: Everything that you expect from a GTA game is there – the story, the cutscenes, the radio stations, the gameplay, Liberty City – this is the real deal right in your pocket.

The game looks and feels great. Rockstar has made a great effort in getting all the details just right, there is something to discover everywhere. Liberty City is loaded with people and cars. You will see tourists in the streets taking pictures, if you run over a fire hydrant you will unleash a water fountain, cars are using their blinkers if they make a turn, traffic lights are directing the cars, you will see some nice weather effects and a day/night system – Liberty City feels like it is alive. From a technical point of view the graphics are actually quite dated, but Rockstar has put all the pieces together so well that this barely matters.

This is especially true in combination with the sound and music. The radio stations have always been a trademark of the GTA series and the guys at Rockstar really have a hand in picking great and catchy tracks. So once again chances are good that you will find yourself aimlessly driving around the city listening to this one radio station that your into.

But there is a lot to do even in between story missions. You can compete in races, earn money as a taxi driver or try yourself in buying and selling ‘goods’, just to name a few of the possible activities. But don’t worry, thanks to your in-game PDA you will never be lost or wondering where to go next. You will get e-mails to let you know about new missions and the built in GPS system will lead the way. The interface and menus are quite complex, but new features are introduced one at a time so you have time getting used to it. Everything is still on a manageable level but it doesn’t feel as intuitive as it could be.

The story is good old GTA material – with a Chinese touch as the title obviously implies. You are playing as Huang Lee, who’s father just got murdered in Liberty City. His father also happened to be a Triad boss, so when Huang Lee is coming to Liberty City to hand over a sword to his his uncle Kenny, he will find himself involved in all sorts of criminal activities rather sooner than later. It’s the GTA we all know and love.

The controls work great on the iPhone. On foot you will be controlling Huang Lee with a virtual analog stick that is replaced by right/left buttons once you enter a car. Driving around Liberty City is fun and intuitive, thanks to the build in steering assistant. This neat assistant helps keeping your car going into the direction the street is going. This feels a bit awkward at first but needs just very little time getting used to. And once you adapt to it, you don’t want to miss it anymore. It makes driving just so much easier. However, if you do like to be in full control and you’re up for the challenge, you can always turn the assistant off in the options. You can also chose to keep the virtual analog stick while driving, but to me the left/right buttons felt more precise and natural.

However, one thing you might be struggling with is the aiming assistant. The game automatically picks a target and you can’t really influence which one. So if there are 3 enemies next to each other the assistant sometimes happily switches between these targets rather than finishing one off after another – which is of course not the most efficient way. When you are trying to strafe or walk backwards it also happens sometimes that you lose the target and suddenly are shooting into the complete opposite direction. Yes, this is annoying. But most of the time it works as it should and I would never consider this to be a deal breaker.

gta 29 GTA: Chinatown Wars Review iPhone Gaming Is Growing Up

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars has pushed the limits of iPhone and iPod gaming. Its incredible depth is outstanding on the iOS platform. You can get it for $9,99 on the App Store, which is more than reasonable for a game like this (especially compared to what you had to pay for it on the DS/PSP). If you didn’t buy it yet, you should give the free lite version a try, I’m sure you wont regret it.

Critically Acclaimed World of Goo Coming To iPhone And iPod Touch – “Hopefully Sometime In March”

world of goo icon2 Critically Acclaimed World of Goo Coming To iPhone And iPod Touch Hopefully Sometime In MarchIndie developer 2dboy has announced on its official blog that World of Goo is finally coming to iPhone and iPod Touch. If you are the least bit into gaming, chances are good that you have heard of World of Goo countless times before. It is a physics based puzzle game that was incredibly well received by both critics and gamers all over the world when it was originally released for Windows in 2008.

Since then 2dboy ported it to several platforms including OS X, Linux, Wii and the iPad. So how come it is available for the iPad and not for iPhone and iPod Touch you might ask? Actually this was planned quite some time ago – 2dboy has been talking about such a port since 2009 to be precise. One of the concerns they had was the smaller screen of the latter idevices and performance issues.

However, these concerns seem to have vanished as the developer now states “[…] against all expectations, the size of the screen was not much of an obstacle at all.” And with the newer and faster versions of the iPhone and iPod Touch, there is probably nothing to worry about performance anymore either.

2dboy hopes to release it “sometime in March”. This means there are already 3 incredible titles announced to be coming next month: Final Fantasy III, Sword & Sworcery and now World of Goo. This is going to be a great month for iOS gamers!

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP – A stunningly unique and promising iOS title coming this March

Sword & Sworcery is one of these games that are very hard to describe in words since it relies so heavily on its audiovisual experience. And what an experience it is! The game was even awarded with an ‘IGF Mobile 2010 Achievement in Art’.

Capybara Games, the developer behind this unique game, just recently released a new trailer. They call it the “Audience Calibration Procedure”. And while it does not reveal a whole lot of the gameplay, it creates yet again a very unique and mesmerizing atmosphere. Have a look:

I bet I am not the only one who was reminded of Half-Life’s G-Man. And this was most likely intended, since Superbrothers themselves described their last years gameplay video to be “like the tram ride in Half-Life”. But don’t get this wrong, while being inspired by the Half-Life universe, they have created something very unique. And being inspired by one of the best and most influential games ever created is not the worst thing I guess. Check out last year’s “Walk in the Woods’ trailer:

From what I’ve seen so far I’m really blown away. The superb pixel art in combination with the hypnotizing music is pushing the exact right buttons on me. I’m really looking forward to get my hands onto Sword & Sworcery. And it seems as if we all don’t have to wait that much anymore: The trailer announces the game to be available on the App Store “Around the Vernal Equinox” – which happens to be the 20th of March this year. Let’s all hope the game can live up to its expectations.

Spirit Review – The Incredible Arcade Game That Never Left My iPhone

icon Spirit Review The Incredible Arcade Game That Never Left My iPhone Yep, the headline is true – and I think out of all games I own Spirit is actually the only game that I never deleted since I originally got it from the App Store. Spirit really is my go-to game whenever I am stuck waiting somewhere.

Remember our review of Tiny Wings? You can basically apply almost everything that was said about the current number 1 on the App Store to Spirit: The gameplay is simple yet original and a perfect fit for the iOS devices. It is easy to understand but hard to master and the visuals (think of Geometry Wars) are beautiful to look at. Did this grab your attention? I hope so, because the game is really worth checking out.

spirit 12 Spirit Review The Incredible Arcade Game That Never Left My iPhone spirit 8 Spirit Review The Incredible Arcade Game That Never Left My iPhone spirit 9 Spirit Review The Incredible Arcade Game That Never Left My iPhone

You’re taking control of the very agile ‘Spirit’ that has to not only avoid geometric figures that are floating around, but warp them away. Some of these figures float around randomly, some have a fixed movement pattern, and some of them even chase you. If any of these figures touch the Spirit, you lose one of your 3 lives. But avoiding them doesn’t do the trick: The Spirit leaves a slowly disappearing tail behind itself while moving. If you are fast enough to form a circle with the tail, it will create a warp hole that sucks in all of the geometric figures that get too close to it. Which will however make new and even more aggressive figures appear. But sucking them in is what will boost your highscore. The points you earn depend on how many figures you suck in with one warp hole – the more, the higher the multiplier.

That said, it is crucial that you are able to control the Spirit as precise as possible. And oh boy, are the controls slick. This game really stands and falls with its controls and the developer absolutely nailed it. All you have to do is slide your finger across the screen and the Spirit will mimic your movement. No buttons, no d-pads. This works without any recognizable input delay and feels just perfect.

The visuals are really nice to look at – bright colors will light up your screen while the outlines of your warp holes pulse organically. It’s the attention to detail that stands out once again and is so important in my opinion – even the tiny wings of the Spirit are animated. The sound and music don’t disappoint either. While being very subtle, the audio really complements the gameplay for me in an engaging way.

There are 3 game modes: ‘Classic’, ‘Extreme’ and ‘Pulse’. While ‘Classic’ is the one I have been describing and ‘Extreme’ is, well, a more extreme version of the ‘Classic’ mode, ‘Pulse’ is a bit different. It was just recently introduced by the developer in an update. In this mode you lose the ability to create warp holes – instead there randomly appear floating circles that will expand into warp holes when your Spirit touches them. This is an interesting spin on the gameplay and I really enjoy this mode.

The game is currently on a 50% sale for $0.99 – it is not mentioned how long this sale will last. If ‘Geometry Wars’ like arcade games are your thing, I can only recommend to grab Spirit. It will be a nice workout for your thumb and maybe it will become your go-to game as well.

Tiny Wings Review – A Little Gem For Everyone

tiny wings Tiny Wings Review A Little Gem For Everyone

Tiny Wings is one of these games that really shine on the iOS platform. While the game was probably targeted at the mainstream and casual gamers, it is executed so well that it has something for everyone in store, even for gamers that usually are looking for a more complex experience.

Tiny Wings is just so well executed. It is simple, beautiful and addictive. By simple I mean probably as simple as it gets. The controls consist out of touching the screen and not touching the screen. Simple, right? The gameplay is also explained very quickly: You control a bird that can barely fly. That’s why you need to help him by utilizing gravity in the form of loads of tiny mountains. If you touch the screen, the bird becomes heavy and gains speed while sliding downhill. As soon as you start sliding uphill you lift your finger from the screen. The bird will now flap its wings and will fly a little, depending on how much momentum it gained. So it is all about the right timing to get as much momentum as possible. The game ends once the night catches up so the faster you go, the further you come. On the way you can collect coins, fly really high to touch the clouds and get a perfect slide through a valley to get some bonus points. There is also a multiplier for these points, triggered by three perfect slides in a row. This will put you in ‘Fever Mode’ that lasts as long as you keep making great slides and all points earned are worth double during that time.

It is one of these ‘takes one minute to learn, but a long time to master’ concepts that makes it so addictive.

The art style of this game is great. Everything is designed with great attention to detail and very intuitively, including the menus and the tutorial. It looks like a pastel painting and runs super smooth on even the first generation of iDevices. The sound and music is charming as well but somehow I found myself turning it off after a few minutes – but maybe that’s just me.

While being a bit limited when it comes to the amount of content, priced at 0.99$ this is a fair deal that will definitely shorten your next wait for the bus. And as always in the App Store, there is a good chance that future updates might bring something new to Tiny Wings. Game Center support for example is already announced by the developer, currently it comes with OpenFeint only.

So if you enjoy the occasional casual snack, you should really give ‘Tiny Wings’ a try.
